It’s almost been a year since Eero Ettala from Finland won the Best-Trick-Contest at the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam 2008. He earned himself a 3-week surftrip to the Balicamp!
Finally, he and his girlfriend found the time to take that trip. Now he’s back, relaxed and stoked by surfing. And the best thing about it: The guy from northern Europe, who had never been surfing before, even catched some waves.
Read the Interview to find out what Eero has to say about this very special vacation:
1. What were your first thoughts when winning the surf trip to the Balicamp at the Pleasure Jam?
I was really hyped. I had never surfed before and I had never really done a trip like that to a warm destination. And it’s nice to go some where without having to carry your board bag too. And lets say, if I had won 1000€ prize money on the pleasure jam I would have spent it on something stupid, so it was perfect getting a trip like this instead!
2. As a guy from northern Europe, spending most of your time in the snow, how do you feel on a tropical island like Bali?
It was cool, time to let my body regain after all the beating in winter, really relaxing. It took me a few days to get used to the heat, but after some days it felt so nice and warm hanging out there. It’s so nice to hang out only in shorts and sandals for once!
3. You are a pro snowboarder and a very good skater too. But you had never been surfing before-how did you like it and will there be further surf trips in the future?
Oh thanks! Yeah I really liked surfing even if it was pretty hard at first and I didn’t really get to the level yet that I can decide where I wanna go with the board, so maybe I will learn that step next time. I was thinking it might be nice to go back to Bali next summer again, maybe I'll make it an annual thing.
4. How did you and your girlfriend enjoy your stay in the Balicamp and what kind of personal impressions and memories will you take home with you?
We really loved our vacation. It was definitely one of the best trips we have ever been on. We met a lot of people and became good friends, nice vibes throughout our whole journey, great food, cheap shopping, loads of good memories and nice photos. And best of the all learned the basics of surfing so now I feel more comfortable going surfing again next time when I get a chance!
